DAY 14) DO I NEED A BOOKER? Obviously this is one of the biggest misunderstandings in our scene. Young acts often think they need an agency to become more bookings but that´s wrong. There are two ways you can go as an artist. The first one is: releasing a hit single. And the second one is going the slow way: working hard, releasing a lot and getting better from year to year. It´s a long process but it will be successfull when you stay ambitious and patient. The more successful you are, the more agents want to work for you. No agency can bring an unknown DJ to all the national and international clubs, also when the fee is low. The simple reason is: a small and unknown act is not interesting for a club. They prefer to book their own residents in addition to the huge headliners. Maybe you already found a booking agency who includes you to it´s rooster, but please don´t have huge expectations in the beginning. A booker has to pay his flat, car, bills aswell so every agency prefers to concentrate on their headlining acts. If you´re a rising act, you probably don´t get that big DJ fee so a booker don´t receives a huge booking fee although he´s spending the same time for you as for his bigger acts. I met so many rising acts having wrong expectations when they have joined an agency. So my advice to you is: you only need a booker when you´re becomming a more famous act and you´re getting more requests that you can handle by yourself. When your own bookings become a fulltime job and you are not able to concentrate on music anymore you will need someone who´s doing this job for you. Booking especially means doing all the communication: money, contracts, travel, visa, transfer, hotel, food, tech-rider, etc.. - not only acquisation! Also a big label name on the flyer is totally unimportant when your artist name is still unknown. Never expect a flood of bookings when you signed a single to a well known label. The single has to sell aswell and that´s the only way to make people pay attention to your music. Don´t waste your time in moaning and crying „I don´t have any bookings...“! Stand up, go to your studio and produce better music or do better podcasts. It´s not enough to have a few nice singles out and some good DJs play your music. Your artist alias needs to be an established name inside the scene to become attractive for clubs and promoters. Until you didn´t reach this status, do all the bookings by yourself. That´s also a good way to build up your own network. Have a nice sunday, fellows! :-) Marc.
