DAY 19: Armor check – Belt of Truth Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist. -Ephesians 6:14 NIV In the Roman armor of Paul’s day, the belt, which went around the soldier’s waist, was one of the most important pieces of equipment. Everything else the soldier needed in battle was fastened to his belt. If the belt wasn’t in place, nothing else was secure. Paul tells us that a Christian’s first foundational piece of armor is the belt of truth. If the belt is not secure, then the rest of the armor will fall. If we aren’t grounded in truth, we will surely fall. But how do we know that we are grounded in truth? By studying the Word of God and knowing the Scriptures, we are putting on the belt of Truth. When an aspiring agent of the U.S. Treasury is trained on how to detect counterfeit money, do they look at counterfeit bills? No. Their training consists of one thing and one thing only: endless hours of touching, inspecting, and sniffing actual money. If a person knows what the genuine article looks like, they will never accept a counterfeit. I want to encourage you to dig deep into the Word for yourself every day. When you do, you’ll learn to recognize the lies of the enemy and not be fooled by the counterfeit.
