DAY 20 MARCH 2014 Theme: MOAB, YOU TRUSTED IN YOUR STRENGTH AND YOUR WEALTH, BUT NOW EVEN YOU WILL BE CONQUERED; YOUR GOD CHEMOSH WILL GO INTO EXILE, ALONG WITH HIS PRINCES AND PRIESTS. [JEREMIAH 48:7 GNB]. Text: JEREMIAH 48. As it was in the day of the prophet Isaiah, so it came to be in the day of the prophet Jeremiah; the Lords message concerning Moab had not changed! There abided with the people of the country strength and wealth, but they saw not the hand of Yahweh in it and they sought not the face of Yahweh in it! Then, instead of befriending the people of Israel with Yahweh abided so that they may learn the knowledge of Yahweh from them, they waxed stronger in hostility against the chosen people of Yahweh and so brought more condemnation upon themselves! Yahweh Himself testified against them and pronounced judgement to urge their enemies on, Make Moab drunk, because it has rebelled against me. Moab will roll in its own vomit, and people will laugh. Moab, remember how you jeered at the people of Israel? You treated them as though they had been caught with a gang of robbers. [JEREMIAH 48:26-27 GNB]. Moab will be destroyed and will no longer be a nation, because it rebelled against me. [JEREMIAH 48:42 GNB]. Because the people of Moab would not continue to have Yahweh as its one, true, sovereign and only faithful God, it was not going to continue as a nation, and that, for it, was a sure consequence. [NIGERIA also is not yet a nation, but NIGERIANS can make it one if they really, really want to]. There abounded in the country glory and might, but where was the wisdom? There is no wisdom in it at all and so .... The town of Madmen will be silenced .... [JEREMIAH 48:1-2 GNB]. Madmen like we know are men that have lost their right senses or the right use of their uses. And Yahweh calls Heshbon, the countrys center of power [the capital city], a town of Madmen, a noisy market of idle charletans and a loathsome sight to behold! Moab also had for a national god a named god called Chemosh, whom they had set up for a rival to Yahweh, but apparently more powerful at the background were the unnamed gods of strength and wealth. These gods were not of Yahweh, and so there had to be war in the land! Against this, it is Yahweh Himself who holds in testimony, Moab has always lived secure and has never been taken into exile. Moab is like wine left to settle undisturbed and never poured from jar to jar. Its flavour has never been ruined, and it tastes as good as ever. So now, the time is coming when I will send people to pour Moab out like wine. They will empty its wine jars and break them in pieces. Then the Moabites will be disillusioned with their god Chemosh, just as the Israelites were disillusioned with Bethel, a god in whom they trusted. [JEREMIAH 48:11-13 GNB]. I will cry for the people of Sibmah, even more than for the people of Jazer. City of Sibmah, you are like a vine whose branches reach across the Dead Sea and go as far as Jazer. But now your summer fruits and your grapes have been destroyed. Happiness and joy have been taken away from the fertile land of Moab. I have made the wine stop flowing from the winepresses; there is no one to make the wine and shout for joy. The people of Heshbon and Elealeh cry out, and their cry can be heard as far as Jahaz; it can be heard by the people in Zoar, and it is heard as far as Horonaim Eglath Shelishiyah. Even the brook of Nimrim has dried up. I will stop the people of Moab from making burnt offerings at their places of worship and from offering sacrifices to their gods. I, the LORD, have spoken. [JEREMIAH 48:32-35 GNB]. Pity the people of Moab! The people who worshipped Chemosh have been destroyed, and their sons and daughters have been taken away as prisoners. [JEREMIAH 48:46 GNB]. Yahweh yet testifies in judgement against Moab for its pride, arrogance and conceit! His words, Moab is very proud! I have heard of how proud, arrogant, and conceited the people are, how much they think of themselves. I, the LORD, know of their arrogance. Their boasts amount to nothing, and the things they do will not last. [JEREMIAH 48:29-30 GNB]. Last but not the least, Yahweh condemns Moab for its war-loving people. He declares, Helpless refugees try to find protection in Heshbon, the city that King Sihon once ruled, but it is in flames. Fire has burnt up the frontiers and the mountain heights of the war-loving people of Moab. [JEREMIAH 48:45 GNB]. Look now at the war-loving people in the midst of you and those that surround you; they are indeed asking for war! And wars of retaliation will be fought in the lifetime of kings and nations, in this world, not after their death and certainly not elsewhere; for such is the limit that Yahweh has assigned to them all!
