DAY 3 -- Bowling Green to Fremont: If youve missed the daily blogs for the first 2 days of the Tour, yours truly was celebrating his sons wedding on Saturday and enjoying family from out of town on Sunday. I joined the Tour on Monday morning in Bowling Green. We gathered at City Park to ready our bikes and plan the day. The skies were bright and the air crisp...ideal weather. In addition to myself, Allen Porter from the Avon Lake club, and Dan Waggoner from the Fremont club also joined us. Our route--well marked by Randy Box and MESA treasurer Jerry Peacock--first took us into Waterville, where Box and Peacock hosted the first refreshment break of the day and presented MESA a donation from the Waterville Rotary club. Thanks, Waterville!! Our next stop was Perrysburg, where Perrysburg club president Rob Fox had organized a refreshment stop at the Carranor Hunt & Polo Club, which was well attended by numerous club members. Thank-you, Perrysburg, for your support. We departed Perrysburg with plenty of time to reach our lunchtime destination...so much extra time that Randy Box decided to stay a while longer and practice changing a flat tire. While he labored under the expert tutelage of George Costaras, the rest of us followed a zig-zag route toward Woodville that couldnt decide if it wanted to follow a tailwind or a headwind. It all balanced out, with the fun of 23-mph pace lines evenly spaced with stretches of laborious pedaling. The A-team (Bill Billy Joe Ray Bob Pepple, Kim Mamma Pepple, Ken The Flying Reverend Pollitz, and Dan The Man Waggoner) may have set a few records getting to the appropriately-named Speedtrap Diner in Woodville. (Fascinating place, great food). After sandwiches, we made a brief stop in Elmore to visit Dan Waggoners cycle shop, and to meet up with Abbie Semmer from the Fremont Club. As we browsed the bikes and gear, Abbie checked the weather forecast and pointed out a heavy line of thunderstorms approaching, prompting us to quickly saddle up and race down the North Coast Inland Trail bike path to beat the storm into Fremont. We reached the end of trail and were met by Fremont Rotarians Scott Lang and Tim Ellenberger owners of nearby Motion Controls Robotics, who saw the black skies chasing us and directed us into the service bay of his nearby facility. We were wheeling the last bike inside as the skies opened up in buckets. Thanks, Scott, for the timely shelter. The box truck backed into the bay to collect our bikes, and our various Rotarian hosts arrived to collect the riders for showers. We then met with the Fremont club to enjoy a cook-out at Peninsular Farms, a 500-acre family farm donated by Rotarian Don Miller as a conservatory to protect it from development. The dinner, complete with complementary massages, was capped by a financial presentation to MESA and then a tour of Don Miller’s Indian motorcycle collection. Thanks to the Bowling Green, Waterville, Perrysburg, and Fremont Rotary clubs for your outstanding support of MESA and the 2014 Tour! WE RIDE!
