DAY 6) IS A GOOD PRODUCER ALSO A GOOD DJ? 10 or 20 years ago it was totally enough when you were a good DJ but nowadays you need to combine so many things to be a successful artist. So every producer has to be a good DJ and every DJ has to produce good music to get your feet inside the scene. But that´s not all: you have to be a booker, label manager, promoter, marketing-hero, entertainer, graphic designer and a web programmer aswell - or at least you know the right guys who can manage this for you. It´s a hard job to become a good producer. But it´s hard in the same way to become a good DJ. You know, there are so many DJs around the planet - it´s a big competition. Learning how to mix is quite simple, especially nowadays with the help of new technology. But a good DJ needs to catch the vibe on the floor, finding the right moment to play the perfect record which makes the people dance. That´s often not easy and I had to collect lots of experiences aswell. I remember that I played a couple of tracks on a friday in Montpellier (France) and it was such an amazing part, people were yelling and jumping. So the day after I played the same few tracks in Berlin and the people got bored on the floor. Learning how to handle this process is becomming a good DJ. When you have a great party in your favorite club today, it could be totally different when you come back for the next time. To answer the headlining question I think maybe yes, maybe no. A fulltime producer don´t cares so much about new releases, he´s just working on his own music during the whole week and so maybe he gets lost in stupid details while mixing a DJ set on the weekend. And a fulltime DJ maybe is influenced too much from his favorite records when he´s comming to the studio. So I think there must be a middle course. I have learned to spend one day a week listening to promos and finding the secret pearls for my DJ sets. And I´m crossing fingers for everyone of you! If you want to earn money and doing music for your main job nowadays it´s not enough to be a good producer. About 90% of your income will be playing gigs. And finally you have to decide if I´m a good DJ too! Here is my application :-) https://soundcloud/pleinvrees/marc-depulse-pleinvrees-podcast-10 I did this mix for the Pleinvrees guys, also in preparation for my first Pleinvrees show in Amsterdam to be announced in early 2015.
