DAY 6: Lander to Dubois – 75.9 miles 2,815 feet Cycle Greater Yellowstoners cruised out of Lander and into the Wind River Indian Reservation, shared home of two tribes – the Eastern Shoshone and the Northern Arapahoe. The fort, named for a Shoshone chief, is the only U.S. military outpost named for a Native American, and both Washakie and Sacajawea are buried here. After the fort, they pedaled through windswept terrain for 15 miles with Gannett Peak, Wyoming’s tallest, looming on your left, before plunging down to meet the Wind River. They followed the Wind through both stark canyons and lush fields into the rough-and-ready town of Dubois (DOO-boyce). Originally called “Never Sweat” for its warm, dry winds, the town’s outskirts were once home to a ranch owned by Butch Cassidy.
