DAY 7) HOW TO BUILD UP YOUR OWN CORPORATE IDENDITY As a professional DJ or producer you are an independent artist. Others would say you´re a company because you´re paying taxes as everyone else. And every company need it´s own marketing construct. We all know that music is art, love and passion - but in the end you want to sell a product: YOU! Either as a DJ to play gigs or as a producer to sell your music. And so every love and passion needs a helping hand and that´s what I want to talk about today: your corporate idendity! 3 sub groups of CI are important when we reflect it to our industry. 1) Corporate design: Means creating your own graphics/logo. For a logo find a font which has a free licence or create something new. Of course the lettering should fit to the style you are doing. And because YOU are the company it seems logical to have professional artist photos. There are simply no rules, but maybe it´s cool to have a black or white background for the first takes, simply because it´s easier for a graphic designer to put your face inside an event flyer. If you choose outdoor pictures ask yourself if you really want to have stereotype DJ photos with headphones on, vinyl in your hand or sitting on your record case. It´s easy to express your style and music in photos: if you´re a Hippie, choose colored outdoor pictures and don´t forget your joint ;-) If you´re doing serious techno beats it would be nice to not do the clown in front of the camera. 2) Corporate communication: That´s all about the communication inside and outside. That means finding a businesslike way to talk to your booker, PR-manager, label partners (inside) and of course to promoters, fans, radio stations, magazines, etc (outside). Simply be yourself and don´t play a role. Be kind to the people you work with and never loose the respect for others people job. 3) Corporate philosophy: What will you be in music? What are your goals? Creating your own philosophy doesn´t mean to decide if you will buy a jeans or a pullover next week. Philosophy means having a masterplan of what you will achieve and what you will avoid. In music it means: when you´re successfully doing soft house music today, it´s better to not surprise your fans with hard techno music tomorrow. DJs: When you´re playing in a commercial disco in your town you will probably not become a resident in an underground club in the same area. Ask your heart which way you want to go and never loose the way. Always take your time to make decisions! It´s like doing magic to combine it all in a smart way but never forget that you´re still an artist. Always remember: music is your hobby, it´s a pleasure to get your stuff sold and you´re thankful to play so many gigs so always have in mind where you came from. You don´t have to be a business man but if you want to reach bigger stages one day you should have a professional background. Have a nice sunday & a nice 2nd advent, Marc
