DAY TRIPPIN.... Ok, so yesterday was quite the adventure... Deland bound.. The day went well, Gus ran super, (except on the way back, in a rain storm, he decided to test my nerves and not function. I admit i drove , in the dark, in the rain, without wipers, (thank whomever for Rain X), Other than that all went well... Chickenfriedart and I had a good time and got lots of great pix on the way out, but surely didnt expect Deland to be what it was.. A cultural mecca in the middle of Florida, The scene was out of of Austin, New Orleans and Gainesville all melded into one. The Town looks like Main Street in High Springs, but on steroids. There are SO many cool shops and historic buildings. This is all right up the road from Stetson University. Cool little cafes, bars, clothing stores, museums, and even a gorgeous theatre called the Athens.. If youre looking for the perfect day trip, then Deland should be your destination. While youre there, go to Florida Victorian, on S.Georgia Street (this is a ONE stop shopping for all your Victorian, Craftsman, and other renovation needs, and Davinvi Cafe, a daily live venue, with atmosphere, music, and locals that boast their towns history, (for those of you that didnt know, Frank lloyd Wright designed a large part of the Stetson Campus), and DaVinci Design Studio, where Mark Shuttleworth, restored an old Victorian house into a gallery to display art made from found objects... enter Sparky, gustav and the rest of the clan. The DaVinci Design Studio is such a pretty space, with art from all around Florida, I even happened across work by George Ferreira, of the Ice House Gallery in McIntosh. Come on down and check it out for yourselves, you wont be dissapointed. As a matter of fact, NEXT Friday is the Art Walk, when the studio is having a reception and next door at the DaVinci Cafe will be hosting live music in their courtyard.
