DBC Press Release: “Speak out on Library changes says Council Leader Dartford Council Leader Jeremy Kite has urged local people to let Kent County Council know how strongly they feel about one of Dartford’s favourite buildings ahead of a final decision about its refurbishment. KCC has recently extended a consultation period on its plans for Dartford’s historic Central Library and local people now have until 21st September to set out their view. “It’s great that KCC want to invest in our Library but I think many will share the view that some of the changes proposed are unsympathetic and inappropriate for a building of this age and style. We managed to get a previous planning application withdrawn because the Library Service simply hadn’t consulted users about it and at least they are now talking to local people. The important thing now is for people to respond and let KCC know how much they care about the building.” Councillor Kite insists that he is not resistant to change and has offered proposals of his own to bring the Library into the 21st Century without throwing away its great heritage. “I know that libraries must adapt to meet the challenges of the internet, e-books and digital distribution but Dartford Central Library is one of only two in the world built in this particular style and we should not allow its ambience to be disturbed without great care. I would like to see the old doors linking to the museum reopened and nice sofas, more items of local historical interest and traditional furniture to create a classically beautiful space where residents can read, research, relax and engage with digital information and a range of services. The library houses the Dartford local history collection and I would love to see greater use made of it. Above all, we need to remember that Dartford Central Library is a grand old building and deserves respect.” The KCC Consulation has been extended and runs until 21st September.
