DC Lawmaker Encourages Facebook to Include Silver Alerts Following this week’s announcement that the world’s largest social media site Facebook will begin to include targeted Amber Alerts in users’ news feeds, District of Columbia At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds has sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zukerberg encouraging him to also include Silver Alerts to aid in finding missing senior citizens. “I think it’s a great benefit to society that Facebook has decided to issue Amber Alerts and encourage Facebook to also include the Silver Alerts, that results in the recovery of many missing seniors across the United States, stated Councilmember Bonds. Similar to Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts are issued when senior citizens are missing. Thirty-five states, the District of Columbia and New York City issue Silver Alerts while nine states have programs that contain criteria similar to existing Silver Alert programs and eight have Endangered Person Advisories. The full text of the letter is attached and below: Mr. Mark Zuckerberg CEO Facebook 1601 Willow Road Menlo Park, CA. 94025 January 15, 2015 Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I am writing to express my sincere gratitude upon learning that Facebook has decided to team with law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by launching an Amber Alert program to distribute information about missing children on Facebook. Utilizing the world’s largest social media site to publicize endangered children is a great service to the general public and will undoubtedly save many children’s lives. As a mother, grandmother, elected official, and Facebook user, I am writing to thank you for this service. I am also mindful of the terrifying and often deadly circumstances that can occur when a member of our senior population goes missing and therefore, I encourage you to expand upon the Amber Alert notices by publicizing targeted Silver Alert notices to aid in the recovery of missing senior citizens, many who suffer from Alzheimers disease, mental disabilities or dementia. Silver Alert notices could be included in targeted news feeds. This would also be a great benefit to society by protecting a segment of the population that has made long-standing contributions to our nation and world. If I can be of service in any way, please contact me. Sincerely, Anita Bonds
