DCS should be treated equally as civil servants. The Department of Correctional Services employee a vast number of people, all of which are considered as a segment of the overall civil servants in the country, yet when it comes to the choices of unions and or medical aid, they are by implication forced into situations which other civil servants do not have to do. Within the circumambient ambit of correctional services, the Unions POPCRU and PSA are getting the majority of dominant exposure whereas an all inclusive union SACOSWU is being treated as an ‘illegitimate and or adoptee child’ with less respect and or recognition. The Union SACOSWU is a union that has been established and founded to specifically cater for the workers of the Department of Correctional Services, and as such with them only serving one master, should be the prominent union of choice. The other two unions serve various segments within the civil servants of the country and their main focus is not on a specific segment but wearing different caps in different situations. The priorities of each and every segment that it represents is therefore not adequately addressed and acted upon. Members of Correctional Services therefore become sacrificial lambs at the altar in having to join unions and or medical aid schemes of which they are by implication ‘forced’ into whereas alternative unions and or medical aids would be of more benefit to them in their ambit of duties. Within the Department of Education the Union SADTU represents teachers only and their medical aid of choice being Bonitas. The workers within Municipalities also have their own exclusive union SAMWU , medical aid, yet within Correctional Services all employees have to become adopted members to unions and or medical aids that do not exclusively cater for their specific needs. The employees should be recognized in their respective field of service to government and should have the choice of an exclusive union and medical aid that caters for its needs, and in this way, members having better benefits and or representation at negotiations and the unions would be exclusively for the department in which they serve. After all our Constitution in the country guarantees us ‘freedom of choice’ and that should be the ingredient in which employees should be treated to be represented by an union that would have its needs and wants as its first and foremost priority and a medical aid that would allow its members maximum benefits, with lower and or lesser monthly contributions than that which they now have to pay, just for having a medical aid and union, which do not exclusively cater for them in their ambit of duties.
