It is the solicitation for donations that is of concern. After all, it was supposed to be about the dogs. This release does disgust us. DDB was warned about the rep that took this action but did nothing about it. As bad as Sonnys situation is, the CEO has suggested euthanasia for biters, and in one case, a dog, Storm, was euthanized when he attacked the CEO. Storm was also the reason for DDBs stun guns. --------------------------------------------------------- Two women travel 3000 miles from east coast to Forks, Washington, to advocate for dogs trapped in sanctuary Hope to gain release of the dog their organization put there as well as others who cry for help Smithfield, VA – November 11, 2013 – Sonny was rescued from a chain in Washington state in July 2012 to a lot of applause and fanfare and high hopes for a better tomorrow. What should have been the start to a whole new life became a year-and-a-half nightmare for him after he bit his foster dad and was sent to the Olympic Animal Sanctuary by a former Washington state representative of Dogs Deserve Better Inc. The Olympic Animal Sanctuary was still well-respected in the state at that time, and DDB founder Tamira Thayne postulates that the representative believed all the hype without checking into the sanctuary in person before sending Sonny there. Unfortunately, on September 14, 2013, the group learned that Sonny was most likely living trapped in a large warehouse 24/7 with as many as 120 other dogs; and—worst of all—spending every moment of every day in a crate. He was better off on the chain. States Robin Budin, now rescue coordinator for Dogs Deserve Better, We are absolutely appalled at what appears to be the living conditions of the dogs trapped in the Forks sanctuary. We repeatedly e-mailed the founder Steve Markwell asking for Sonny to be released back to us or to see evidence of conditions where he is living at the facility; not only has he not provided a shred of evidence that Sonny is alive and well, but he has not responded to us at all. That raises a serious red flag. She continues, We have done all we can by phone and e-mail, and local officials have not responded to our pleas to help Sonny and the others. Now the founder, Tamira Thayne, and I will travel to Forks December 2-15 in hopes that face to face meetings and organized protests will give us progress into re-rescuing Sonny and the others trapped there too. We are in contact with other groups and individuals who are very fearful over what has become of dogs they placed in the facility. Although Forks police documented unsavory conditions in the facility in November 2012, they failed to follow through with charges or removing the dogs. We want to know why. This failure has sentenced all the dogs to yet another year of life in unacceptable conditions. One neighbor complaint obtained through a freedom of information act said in part: It is my growing concern that with the escalating putrid odors and the mournful howling...that these animals are being forced to live in an inhumane environment that no animal should ever have to endure. The same neighbor describes smells so horrible she gagged to the point of being sick. Budin and Thayne are setting up meetings with the mayor, with local officials, and with law enforcement, and hope to be allowed inside the facility to see Sonny. If not, they will organize ongoing protests at both the sanctuary and the mayors office and post a daily blog about their fight for these dogs rights.
