#DDORANGE The first Marathon in Ancient Greece: In 490 B.C., the Athenian army defeated the invading Persian army in a battle in the plain of Marathon. The Αthenians ordered the messenger Pheidippides to run ahead to Athens and announce the victory to the city. The diastance between Marthon and Athens was roughly 42 km. Pheidippides had to run in intense late summer heat. When he finally arrived at the Athenian agora, he exclaimed “We have won”. Then, he collapsed dead from exhaustion. In the 1896 Olympics (the first modern Games), the organizers wanted an event to celebrate Greek history. French historian Michel Breal suggested a long-distance race from Marathon to Athens to honor Pheidippides’ run. The gold medal of the Games was won by the Greek runner Spiridon Louis and the race was decided to be included in later Games.
