DE FACTO RELATIONSHIP FOR PARTNER VISAS: What is the one year relationship requirement? The one year de facto relationship requirement is a criterion that must be met by applicants for a Partner Visa who claim to be in a de facto relationship. To satisfy this requirement, the couple must demonstrate that they have been in a de facto relationship for at least 12 months before the visa application is made. Did you know?(Exemptions from the one year relationship requirement): You do NOT need to show 12 months of living together if your relationship is registered which will let you lodge your Partner visa application with a certified copy of the certificate of registration of the de-facto relationship). If you are in a relationship with an Australian and living in Queensland, Victoria or New South Wales, you may be able to register your relationship. This should then let you avoid the usual 12 month de-facto relationship requirement where an applicant is applying for an Australian Permanent residence visa or a Spouse (provisional) visa.
