DEALING WITH THE ENEMY 1. WHO IS THE ENEMY? One who sets him/herself over against you, one who opposes you in a lawsuit – an opponent, “a prosecutor”, an accuser. In other words, the enemy is the one who seeks your downfall, seeks to draw you back, an obstacle to your growth; the one who stands against you. 2. FORMS (CLASSES) OF ENEMIES i. Demonic hosts – Eph. 6:12; 1Pt. 5:8 ii. Human agents – Mic. 2:8 iii. Personal sinful desires, the flesh – Gal. 5:16 iv. Systems of the world contrary to the will of God – 1Jn. 2:15-17 Satan stands as the arch-enemy of man (the Christian); he uses the other vessels to attack, fight. 3. HOW DO THEY OPERATE, AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM? A. SATAN AND HIS DEMONS Satan is a liar and cunning, artful – Jn. 8:44; Eph. 6:11 He is aggressive destroyer looking for any available opportunity to destroy – Jn. 10:10; 1Pt. 5:8. a. Combat him with the truth – Eph. 6:19; e.g. of Jesus – Mt. 4:4 b. Give him no foothold, block all possible passages – Eph. 4:27; resist him – 1Pt. 5:9; Jas. 4:7 c. Put the whole armour of God and be prayerful – Eph. 6:13-19 B. HUMAN AGENTS These are but vessels; they are not the issue, therefore not the target. Counter act their activities with the god-nature in you – love, bless them and do them good – Mat. 5:44-48. C. PERSONAL SINFUL DESIRES The devil uses our desires to weaken our personal spiritual lives and relationship with God. a. Walk in the Spirit – Gal. 5:16 b. Reckon yourself dead to the flesh – Rom. 6:11 c. Yield your body and its members to God as instrument of righteousness – Rom. 6:13-14 d. Let the Spirit control your emotions
