DEAR DIKMA: The stigma is hard to handle. So it gets harder every time I have to ask for help. What is even more hurtful, and harder to handle is when those close to us, sometimes even in our own support system, use hurtful slang. It may be a joke, but in the back of your mind you still catch the implication that there is something fundamentally wrong with you as a person. And those who dont understand, often family and friends, dont help with phrases like you can be happy if you want to be, I guess you just need attention or you dont need to be all doped up to face life and even its all in your head. You have to make your mind up that you want to be happy. Most dont understand, it is a fight. A constant fight. And more days than Id like to admit, I lose the battle. I didnt choose this. Im not a fan of taking a handful of medication every night, but I keep fighting, and I do what I must. I dont need validation, or praise. But I dont need the hurtfulness of something you dont understand either. I didnt choose this, and I would love to just be happy all the time, but that isnt the life I was given. Im sure the divine creator/s in all their wisdom have a plan, for giving me this. I the meantime. Spread love, not ignorance. We fight hard enough with our own minds. We shouldnt have to fight off the world too.
