DEATH COMES SUDDENLY A legend has died last night. Mike Nichols was one of the most brilliant men who ever worked in the industry and a liberal icon. He even married as his fourth wife Diane Sawyer. Meryl Streep, said about Nichols “he was always the smartest and most brilliant person in the room -- and he could be the meanest, too... He was fifteen years old the year I was born so I grew up under his influence. I was to briefly know Brian Avery, with whom Katharine Ross was standing at the Alter when Dustin Hoffman was pounding at the church doors to stop the wedding. Katherine later married my friend, Sam Elliott. Here’s the secret. The last twenty minutes of The Graduate, and all the scenes shown at the Academy Awards were not directed by Nichols but by stunt man Loren Janes. Nichols had taken sick and was taken to the hospital and Janes took over to keep the film on schedule. This infuriated Nichols who refused to ever give Janes credit, who along with Carol Daniels and Lee Faulkner were already working stunts without credit. I’ve known Janes for years and he was almost engaged to my sister (he asked, she considered). This should have been the biggest break of Loren Jane’s career but Nichols snubbed him and turned vicious towards him. Driven by his jealousy, Nichols made a number of enemies during his lifetime.
