DECEMBER 1, 2014 ATTENTION ALL NEWS MEDIA – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HOLIDAY SEASON ACTIVITIES READY FOR HARLINGEN A tradition unique to the City of Harlingen will ring in the local Holiday Season with the 28th annual Lighting of the Arroyo, as city leaders and a variety of entertainment will celebrate the annual decorations in McKelvey Park, 1325 S. 77 Sunshine Strip. The public is welcome to attend the free event and bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The ceremony and entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 4. Students from numerous local schools will perform; news anchor Marcy Martinez of KGBT-TV Action4 News will be the emcee and the grand marshal will be Art Cavazos, superintendent of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. Santa Claus will make a grand appearance during the RGV Jaycees Christmas Parade with its “Country Christmas” theme at 7 p.m. Friday, December 5. A large audience is expected to line Downtown Jackson Street for the free event. Parade entry and vendor registration is online at rgvjaycees. The winter months also bring two more annual events for Harlingen, the 11th annual Winter Texan Appreciation Fiesta and the 25th annual Jalapeño 100 Bike Tour. The Winter Texan fiesta will be held at Casa de Amistad, 1204 Fair Park Blvd., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2015, and the Jalapeño Bike Tour and Fiesta will be held Saturday, February 21, 2015, at Lon C. Hill Fair Park, along Fair Park Boulevard near the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium.
