DECEMBER 20TH - For years it seemed that Paul Simon would never top the classic Bridge Over Troubled Water album. After splitting from Art Garfunkel his solo career had yielded the occasional great song, but in the mid Eighties hed faded from most peoples consciences. Thats why Graceland proved such a huge shock. Not only was it an instant classic, but the powerful blending of African and world music styles with Simons finely crafted lyrics proved a huge hit all over the world and allowed him a fresh and vibrant kind of expression. The opening track was the most dynamic example of this, but the whole album was a wonderfully varied and often catchy collection. Fans who had been pining for a return to his Sixties glories swiftly realigned their wishes and started eagerly awaiting the follow up.
