DECONGESTING THE LIES BEFORE 2015 (II) - Every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods. - H. L. Mencken The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H. L. Mencken Was he having A Political Nigeria in mind? Why has our voting pattern been rewarding irresponsibility? Why have we been voting for leaders/rulers who do not care a hoot if were existing or not? Thats just one problem with our democracy. In the end, democratic representation - the opiate of the poor masses - is just a way to stop us living a good life, pretending as if things are rosy and not looking for a worthy replacement. Even when it is so obvious that the only remedy is to change our voting pattern, albeit changing bad leadership, some Nigerians still feel comfortable with the frigorific political system, shielding themselves from that incontrovertible fact, that the people at the helm of affairs arent our representatives. Political campaigns are attestations. Politicians are no longer interested in addressing the fundamental issues thatre crushing Nigerias stature to its bone-marrows. In short, political campaigns, of recent, are stupid and boring. Almost never do candidates say anything substantive and, hence, interesting. The chief exceptions occur only when candidates slip up, with their tongues. No mention of policies to boost the economy, shoring up the value of the naira, job creation, youth empowerment, leadership responsibility and accountability, and solving the pervasive insecurity in the land. And now that preparations for 2015 elections are in top gear and feverish pitch, Nigerians shouldve, by now, been able to gauge the political intents of their leaders/rulers. But what are we experiencing? The Nigerian public gobbles up this deceitful, albeit comedic political pabulums, and youd want to ask yourself why else would the political class continue to serve up such infantile idiocy, if not for the fact, that the people had been swallowing the bait hook, line and sinker? - Tajudeen Bakare
