DEDICATED THREAD: Climate change and ocean pH, aka ocean acidification Acidification is often misunderstood to imply the ocean water is acidic. The water is basic, but becoming less so. Acidification is a technically correct term for the process of becoming less basic, but often misunderstood and used in sensationalist ways. Wikipedia: Between 1751 and 1994 surface ocean pH is estimated to have decreased from approximately 8.25 to 8.14, representing an increase of almost 30% in H+ ion concentration in the worlds oceans. Claim for discussion: Warming oceans seem to absorb less CO2. As the earth warms, this means the impact of CO2 emissions on pH decreases. However, that also means that we lose some of our CO2 sink, potentially creating more warming.
