DELTA 2015 GUBER: OVIE OMO-AGEGE, A GENUINE DESIRE TO SERVE - By Ngozi Philip Membu Can anyone reasonably doubt Ovie Omo – Agege’s ability to win and the desire and passion to effectively serve as the Chief Servant of the people of Delta State? Since joining the race to succeed Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, he has proved many political pundits and others who doubted him wrong and today he is considered a front runner. As candidate of the majority ethnic tribe in Delta which has promised its block vote of over 800,000 votes (which is more than half of the votes in the entire state), to the party that fields a candidate from Delta Central, Omo-Agege would have a huge head start in the general election if he is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2015 general election. That would guarantee PDP victory in all elections. There is no one else who can achieve this for PDP. That is the challenge facing other aspirants and until they are able to demonstrate that they can do better than Omo-Agege, it is hard to see how they can win the party’s ticket in the primaries, if truly the interest of the party is paramount in the minds of the delegates and party leaders. Omo-Agege has not hidden his desire to govern Delta state since 2006 when he first declared his interest. In 2006, he appeared to be cruising to victory in the primaries after winning the mock primary for Delta Central aspirants at Osubi until the then Governor, Chief James Ibori, whom all the aspirants depended on, withdrew his support very late in the game. He came second behind Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who eventually won the general election and succeeded Governor Ibori. Omo-Agege learnt from that bitter experience and at the very beginning of the present campaign, he made the decision to secure the support of those that matter most in the general election - the electorates to diversify his support base. Omo-Agege’s earned experience in and out of government has prepared him for the challenge of taking Delta state to the next level and he is indeed ready to provide quality and mature leadership because of his strength and independent mind. He will govern the right way and bring about the necessary changes to move Delta state to the next level. Since joining politics in 2003, his career has defied political gravity, rising to prominence. He was first appointed Executive Assistant to Ibori and later Commissioner for Special Duties (Government House), a position that placed him in the very heart of government and the decision making process of the administration. As Executive Assistant to the former Governor, Omo-Agege understands not only the workings of government at the highest level in the state; he participated in policy formulations and implementation. Ovie Omo-Agege sees politics not as a profession but a call to serve, a call to duty for the uplift of society. He is genuinely committed to this noble cause. Since 2007, he has been in the private sector which has made him better positioned to bring about the necessary changes in governance. He is widely admired and supported within the state and beyond. His constructive role in the affairs of the party and state has enhanced his status and acceptability as a young, intelligent, innovative and experienced leader with a focused determination to achieve set goals. He served the state well enough during his days in government for Deltans to have the full confidence that he will not fall short of expectations to take the state to the next level of shared prosperity, advance opportunity and security for all. He is determined to build on every success of the current administration which are there for all to see and also authenticated by almost all the gubernatorial candidates in Delta State. The list of achievements is both long and real, and it provides the basis upon which even greater results will be built Omo-Agege brings to bear a remarkable insight and understanding of the political, economic and social dynamics of Delta State that is arguably second to none. His unwavering commitment to create jobs will heal broken families and strengthen families, give hope to the hopeless, secure our state, revitalize the economy, overhaul the education and health sectors and modernize infrastructures, which is exactly what Deltans need As a team player, he has the ability to build, nurture and sustain a winning team that will launch Delta state on a sustained growth path of economic opportunities for all, regardless of their ethnic, religious or tribal affiliations as well as promote peace, security and progress. As a detribalized person, he transcends ethnic divides effortlessly that it is reasonable to expect that he can bridge the ethnic divisions and render effective solutions to all problems plaguing the state. He has tremendous cross-over appeal among his peers in the race and the electorates that supports his pan- Delta agenda of even development of all parts of the state. His avowed interest in providing security is based on the fact that no economic, political and social progress can be made in the midst of chaos and criminality. Are these achievable? Yes. It will take a combination of political will, pragmatism, commitment and knowledge of inner workings of government to actualize these lofty goals. Can Ovie Omo-Agege deliver on these promises? Does he have the experience? Does he have the pedigree and the genuine desire to serve for the common good of all people of Delta State? And finally, can he win the governorship with an overwhelming mandate and help President Goodluck Jonathan improve on his 2011 impressive performance in the presidential election in 2015 if he is the governorship candidate of PDP. The answers are definitely YES on all counts. Pastor Membu, an Anioma, writes from Bournemouth, UK.
