DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM ARE NOT THE SAME THING The notion that democracy and freedom are the same is a fallacy. Theyre not. In this 2 1/2 minute video clip, Aeon Skoble, says it is possible for democracies to be a vehicle for freedom, but it is a mistake to assume democracy and freedom are the same thing. 1) A majority belief in something does not make it true. 2) Majorities can be as tyrannical as kings 3) Historically, it is democracies that have elected tyrannical leaders, including some of the most notorious villains the world has known. If freedom is a primary value in a society, democracy can be useful, but only if there are legal boundaries that protect the rights of the individual. Three people at an expensive restaurant voting that the fourth guy pay the bill is democratic, but that doesnt mean it isnt theft.
