DETOURS application deadline approaches Get your DETOURS/Re-visioning Dance applications in - the deadline for 2014 is Friday 14 March. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS 2014 DETOURS: experimental avenues in movement composition. Hosted by: The Wits School of Arts | Division of Dramatic Arts. Directors: Joni Barnard and Jane Crewe. 2014: it’s here! It’s happening. It’s fresh and it’s already on fire. The year of #freedom14 and #fitness14, the Lunar New Year, the Chinese year of the Horse ‘Qianli Ma’, the predicted year of radical shifts and transformations, solidifying your values, standing your ground, taking a risk and detouring from the accepted norm. In South Africa, the heat is on. As we move closer to the ‘D day’ that is 7 May, we reflect on our complex society and on the ways in which we can counter apathy, on all fronts (kill it, dead!) and actively create a movement of change. Art is our way to reflect, to question, to activate and so DETOURS once again puts out a call for creative thinkers and makers, movers and shakers who are looking for an alternative platform to show their work. If your ideas are fresh and engaging, come share them. Understanding the need for alternative platforms of experimentation and expression, DETOURS is a festival that aims to tackle and investigate exciting avenues in movement composition. DETOURS is a Johannesburg based performance platform that aims to detour from the straight and narrow, deter from the banality of the so- called ‘norm’ and re-route to the avant guard, the brave, the risky, the experimental. 2014 marks the third running of the DETOURS festival. This year DETOURS will be joining with Re-visioning Dance festival to include screendance works, dancefilms and works made specifically for film. Running from 9 – 17 May 2014, DETOURS provides a much needed space for senior students and young professionals to perform their work. DETOURS aims to draw participants who are interested in creating work that challenges conventional and traditional understandings of movement, choreography, physical theatre and performance space. Proposals for both live performance (10-15 minutes in length) and for screen (no more than 5 minutes in length) should clearly articulate why the work is experimental in nature and proposed work should not have been previously performed on a major platform. In addition DETOURS will be facilitating a “workshop” platform which provides participants the opportunity to host or attend various workshops and classes running over weekends. Participants interested in facilitating a workshop should make clear mention of this in their applications.
