DEVKOTA JAYANTI OBSERVED TODAY The Nepali literary community observed the 106th birth anniversary of the Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota as the Laxmi Jayanti today organizing various programs today. President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has said the Mahakabi Laxmi Prasad Devkota has made an unparalleled contribution for enriching the Nepali language and literature. Addressing a function organised by the Ratna Library on the occasion of its 52nd anniversary and the 106th birth anniversary of the Mahakabi-the Great Poet- Laxmi Prasad Devkota today, the President said the Mahakabi made a great contribution to enrich Nepali language and literature despite the various hurdles at that time. At the function, President Yadav conferred the honorary membership of the Ratna Library to Poet of the Nation Madhav Prasad Ghimire, senior litterateur Madan Mani Dixit, culture expert Satya Mohan Joshi and president of the Mahakabi Devkota Blood Bank Basanta Kumar Nepal. Likewise, President Yadav garlanded the statues of the Mahakabi Devkota, poet of awakening Dharanidhar Koirala, Nepal Bhasa poet laureate Chittadhar Hridaya, playwright Pahalman Singh Swanr, poet Bhupi Sherchan and fiction writer Bishnu Kumari Waiba. On the occasion, Culture expert Joshi said the Mahakabi had greatly enriched the Nepali language and literature by writing such works as the epic Shakuntal and Sulochana and Muna Madan etc. He added that the Mahakabi was successful in expanding the Nepali language and literature at the national and international level. Similarly, Trimurtiniketan organized a literary program to mark Devkotas 106th birth anniversary in the capital today. On the occasion, chairperson of the institution Indira Prasai, Madandas Shrestha and others garlanded the statues of great poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota, Kabi Siromani Lekhnath Paudel and noted playwright Bal Krishna Sam. LEADER NEPAL BLAMES UCPN (M) FOR INCONCLUSIVE GOKARNA MEET Former Prime Minister and CPN (UML) senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has argued the Gokarna meeting turned inconclusive because of stances of UCPN (Maoist) for ethnic issues. Addressing a greetings exchange and deusi bhailo programme organised at Jorparti, Kathmandu on the occasion of Bada Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals today, leader Nepal said it is better not to waste more time in the name of forging a consensus on disputed issues affecting the CA calendar. He suggested the Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee to go ahead with preparing the questionnaire regarding contentious issues of new constitution if consensus is not possible by October 27. NEPALS ECONOMIC CONDITION: RS. 10 BILLION AS DEFICIT IN BOP: NRB Nepal recorded a 10.5 billion rupees deficit in the balance of payment in the first two months of the current fiscal year in the context it had Rs. 33 billion surplus in the last fiscal year. According to the report unveiled by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) yesteray, in the reviewed period, the current account has a deficit of Rs. 9.98 billion. In the previous year, it had a surplus of Rs. 18.35 billion. There was deficit in government account in the period due to high increase of import of goods and services, and decrease of remittances and grant inflow, the NRB said. COUNTRY CANNOT BEAR MORE FEDERAL STATES: OLI CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said country cannot lead the burden of more federal states. At a greetings exchange programme organized at Thimi, Bhaktapur today, the UML Chairman said more provinces will bankrupt the nation. Chairman Oli said new constitution will be promulgated by January 22 through consensus as two-thirds majority is needed to issue the constitution adding that no political parties has more than one-third seats in the Constituent Assembly (CA). LAXMI PUJA TODAY On the third day of Yamapanchak, Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth, is being worshipped with jubilation throughout the country in the evening in accordance with time honoured tradition. Laxmi Puja or worship to the goddess of wealth is being celebrated in every household today to mark the third day of Yamapanchak of the five-day Tihar festival. Nepali Hindus worship Goddess Laxmi and their wealth in the evening today wishing for prosperity. All the nooks and corners of the house including the courtyard and rooms are illuminated with colourful and decorative lights this evening in the belief that Goddess Laxmi does not come to places which are not properly illuminated, and to please Goddess Laxmi, people light lamps and spend the whole night in vigil. Cultural programme like Deusi and Bhailo are also highlights of the Tihar festival. Extending greetings to Nepali Hindus on the occasion of Tihar, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav expressed his belief that the new constitution will be promulgated within the slated time, guaranteeing sovereignty, integrity and freedom of the country. Similarly, Vice-president Paramananda Jha in his greetings message also said there is no alternative to consensus and cooperation among the political parties to promulgate democratic constitution and strengthen federal democratic system in the country. Likewise, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala extending Tihar festival greetings, said people from all section of society must unite to institutionalize federalism, republicanism and inclusion as the achievements of people’s movement. ICC WCL DIV 3: UGANDA DEFEATS NEPAL BY 20 RUNS Uganda defeated Nepal by 20 runs in the opening match of ICC World Cricket League Division 3 held at Kinrara Oval, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today. Uganda bowled Nepal out in 48.5 overs, restricting it to paltry 183 runs. For Uganda, DK Arinaitwe grabbed the highest 4 wickets, giving away 33 runs in 10 overs. Sent in to bat after losing the toss, Uganda had notched up 203 runs at the cost of 8 wickets in the allotted 50 overs in its first inning. Ugandan player M Mukobe had scored highest 84 runs including 6 fours and 3 sixes off 102 balls before he was caught out by Gyanendra Malla. Earlier, winning the toss and electing to field first, Nepal’s skipper Paras Khadka took 3 wickets in 10 overs with 3 maidens giving away 34 runs. There are six teams - Nepal, Uganda, USA, Singapore, host Malaysia and Bermuda - taking on with each other in round robin format in the ongoing ICC World Cricket League Division 3. The top two teams will be promoted to the ICC WCL Division 2, which will be held in Namibia from January 17 to 24, 2015. Nepal will take on Bermuda at Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia tomorrow. UCPN (MAOIST) SHOULD REJECT CA, BAIDHYA CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidhya has called on the UCPN (Maoist) to withdraw from the Constituent Assembly (CA) if it failed to draft a pro-people constitution. Addressing a greetings exchange and tea reception programme organized on the occasion of Nepal Sambat 1135 at Thaiba, Lalitpur today, chairman Baidhya said the big political parties are neglecting the demands raised by his party, taking advantages of split in communist party. The all-side political conference can take the peace process to its conclusion and draft the new constitution as per peoples aspirations as well as ensure the rights of all communities, Chairman Baidhya added. UCPN (MAOIST) CREATING HURDLES IN CONSTITUTION MAKING: POUDEL Nepali Congress Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel has accused the UCPN (Maoist) of creating hurdles in the constitution making process. Inaugurating a program at Sanothimi today, Poudel charged the UCPN (Maoist) as an obstruction to constitution making. VP Poudel said NCs fight is a fight for institutionalizing democracy and until that is done Congress will keep on fighting.
