DEWNR Prescribed burn at Black Hill Conservation Park A prescribed burn is planned at Black Hill Conservation Park today, Monday, 10 November 2014. The prescribed burn will start at 10.30am and should be completed by 7pm. The burn will affect about 54ha of land on the central eastern boundary of the park about 1km north of Montacute road, Montacute or 2km east of Athelstone. Tracks in the park will be closed during the burn. Smoke may impact Gorge Road, Athelstone and residential areas of Athelstone and Highbury. A smoke plume will be visible from the eastern and north-eastern suburbs. Smoke may remain visible in the area for several days. Crews will be on site until it is safe to leave. The burn will be carried out by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) and SA Water fire crew on behalf of the Mount Lofty Ranges Fire Co-operative. The primary objective of this burn is to reduce fuels in the area to prevent the spread of bushfire. It is part of a state-wide program of prescribed burning in high-risk public land areas this spring. Creating strategically-located, fuel-reduced areas through prescribed burning is essential in helping to reduce the potential spread and impact of bushfires on communities and the environment by providing earlier containment options for firefighters. A list of the week’s planned burns is available on the DEWNR website, at environment.sa.gov.au/firemanagement/Burns_and_bushfires. Subscribe to DEWNR’s fire management email updates for information on prescribed burns and other fire management activities at environment.sa.gov.au/firemanagement/Home/stay-informed. Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
