DFID, the Wellcome Trust and ELRHA announce Special Funding Window against Ebola outbreak The UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Wellcome Trust, and ELRHA have opened a special funding window through the Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises (R2HC) programme with the aim to produce robust research findings that could contribute to the effectiveness of the response to the current outbreak, and help to draw lessons for future outbreaks of Ebola and other communicable diseases. The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has already claimed the lives of over 1000 people. Under-resourced health systems are struggling to cope, and the WHO recently declared the situation an international health emergency. Funding is being made available through the existing £6.5 million R2HC programme. The size and number of grants to be awarded will depend on the number of high-quality applications received that are within the scope of the call. A wide range of applications will be considered in terms of the amount of funds requested. Research proposals must aim to strengthen the evidence base on how to improve public health outcomes following Ebola outbreaks. Relevant research areas could include, but are not limited to: Anthropology Clinical Management Diagnosis Disease control and prevention Ethics Health systems Social mobilisation Surveillance Treatment Given the urgency of this situation, qualified researchers are invited to submit a preliminary Expression of Interest application to ELRHA by 11am BST on 8 September 2014.
