DFPA News Release: Roberts Mountain Road Fire The Douglas Forest Protective Association and multiple fire departments responded to a natural cover fire Friday afternoon near the 1100 block of Roberts Mountain Road. Firefighters arrived on scene and found two grass fires burning near the railroad tracks. The fires were threatening two barns and a home, and actually burned within 20 feet of the barns. No damage to the structures were reported. Firefighters were able to stop the fires spread at approximately two acres of grass, brush, and blackberry bushes. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. The cause of the fires appear to be related to a passing train. “The cooler temperatures and rain showers from thunderstorms earlier in the week provided us some relief from the high fire danger we were experiencing, but that relief is wearing off” says DPFA Fire Prevention Specialist Kyle Reed. “The Roberts Mountain Road Fire is a good reminder of how easily fires can start and spread out of control. With normal to above normal temperatures returning to the area, everyone is asked to use caution when working or recreating in wildland areas.” DFPA responded to the fire with four engines, a helicopter, and a fixed wing observation aircraft. Douglas County Fire District #2, Roseburg Fire Department, Winston Fire Department, and Lookingglass Rural Fire Department also responded to the fire.
