DFPA News Release: Thunder Mountain Lightning Complex Afternoon Update The lightning storm which moved over the eastern portion of the Douglas District Monday evening scattered 282 lightning strikes between Tiller and Harness Mountain, with the majority of lightning activity occurring east and northeast of Glide. As of Tuesday morning, 16 smokes have been reported on DFPA protected land and 7 fires have been located. Five fires were located Monday evening and they have all been trailed and are in mop up or patrol status. Firefighters are currently on scene of two additional fires located early Tuesday morning, 15 miles northeast of Glide. Both fires are under 1/4 acre in size. Firefighters continue to search the lightning effected areas with fire detection cameras, aviation resources, and ground crews to locate other potential fires. In addition to DFPA’s normal fire resources, an additional six engines, a 20 person hand crew, a type three helicopter, and two single engine air tankers have been brought into the area to help contain the fires. A red flag warning for abundant lightning with dry fuels remains in effect for the Umpqua Basin until 11:00 p.m. tonight. Lightning remains in the forecast for Wednesday, but the storm is expected to be wet and more isolated in coverage. With the current lightning situation, DFPA asks that everyone be cautions when working or recreating in wildland areas to prevent human caused fires. Current industrial and public use restrictions can be found online at dfpa.net or by calling DFPA’s information line at 541-672-0379.
