DFPA wants you to know.... I-5 MP 89 North Bound Fires The Douglas Forest Protective Association and rural fire departments responded to two natural cover fires Tuesday afternoon near I-5, mile post 89 north bound. The fires were located about 1/4 mile from each other on the east side of the freeway, and were burning in grass, brush, and timber litter. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fires, keeping the combined fire size under 1/2 acre. Firefighters remained on scene until 7:30 p.m. securing control lines and mopping up hot spots. The cause of both fires are currently under investigation. DFPA responded to the Mile Post 89 fires with four engines, a helicopter, and a fixed wing observation aircraft. Azalea Rural Fire Department, Canyonville – South Umpqua Fire Department, and ODOT also responded to the fires.
