DHAKA: A three-day apparel summit has began in Bangladesh capital Dhaka to draw up a road map nearly to double the countrys clothing exports by 2021 from the current 24 billion U.S. dollars a year. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the first- ever Dhaka Apparel Summit at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city on Sunday. Hasina also opened the International Trade Expo for Building and Fire Safety 2014 and the Center of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industry to help draw up a future road map for the countrys ready-made garment sector. Our objective is to branding Bangladesh and developing an effective roadmap to help increase earnings from garment export to 50 billion U.S. dollars by 2021 when the country will be celebrating golden jubilee of independence, said Atiqul Islam, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), organizer of the summit. Apart from this major focus, he said the three-day summit will address the environment and safety of the garment industry and its millions of employees and workers, 80 percent of whom are female. Bangladesh is the worlds second-largest apparel exporter of western brands. The countrys earnings from garment exports, which make up more than three fourths of the countrys annual incomes since the beginning of this decade, surged to 24.491 billion dollars in the 2013-14 fiscal year (July 2013-June 2014), according to Export Promotion Bureau. The mega event has brought together hundreds of sector insiders including garment manufacturers and exporters, leading global brands, investors, experts and policymakers at a platform where they would find the way of expediting the immense prospect of apparel sector. There would be several panel discussions on topics like environmental sustainability, products and market diversification and global tariff structure, which will benefit local apparel makers to be enriched and knowledgeable about latest apparel technologies and fashion. Issues, related to get greater access of local apparels to the global market, will be highlighted in three particular programs to be held during the event. On the sideline of the event, a safety expo styled Bangladesh Building and Fire Safety Expo, 2014 will also be held, where safety equipment producers will display their products to the factory owners.
