DHANGADI, SEP 18 - Police arrested Umesh Yadav, a suspect behind the 2009 murder of Janakpur-based journalist Uma Singh, from Kailali district on Monday evening. A special team of Nepal Police had arrived in Kailali one week ago after they got a lead on Yadav’s possible whereabouts through cell phone tracking. The team apprehended Yadav from Dhangadi. He was taken to Kathmandu for investigation on Tuesday morning. Chairman of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Shiva Gaunle lauded the police for capturing the suspect. The FNJ had led a nationwide protest against Singh’s murder demanding action against the guilty. Besides involvement in Singh’s killing, Yadav was wanted for his alleged involvement in multiple felonies in Dhanusha, Mahottari and Siraha. Law enforcement agencies from the three districts had launched a hunt for him. A police source said Yadav had fled to Kailali after the search mission began. Yadav is one of the suspects in Singh’s murder that took place on January 11, 2009. The 27-year-old reporter for Radio Today in Janakpur had died of multiple stab wounds, at her rented apartment in Rajaul. Police had arrested Singh’s sister-in-law Lalitadevi, her nephew Abhishek, local Maoist leader Shrawan Yadav and Nemlal Paswan in connection with the incident. The court found Lalitadevi and Nemlal guilty and sentenced them to life, while Shrawan and Abhishek were exonerated. Although police investigation concluded that Singh was murdered over property dispute, there are many who associate the case with the disappearance of her father and brother, which was allegedly perpetrated by Maoist insurgents.
