DICK ENBERG, AT 8:30 THIS MORNING, not having heard from the committee selecting the Ford C. Frick Baseball Hall of Fame Broadcaster Award winner, decided someone deemed more worthy, perhaps Joe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds, had been chosen. But at 8:35 am Enbergs phone rang at his La Jolla home, and he learned he had had been selected. He was asked if would it be possible for him to be at a 10:00 am press conference at baseballs Winter Meeting for the committees formal announcement? In a congratulatory call to him this afternoon, Enberg told me he went to his knees in gratitude upon learning he had won the Frick Award; realizing he had just been informed of the greatest honor of my life, as he phrased it. Dick Enberg has done it all, broadcast the championship encounters of every major sport, but the game that owns his heart is baseball, and to suddenly learn you are going into the games Hall of Fame, was overwhelming to him. And while more than five hours had passed since that 8:35 am phone call, I could hear the quiver in his voice -- and Dick Enbergs voice doesnt quiver.
