DID YOU KNOW? Although mothers are frequently told this, there has never been a documented case of a baby being allergic to his/her mothers own milk. Ever. When an allergy is suspected, it is usually caused by a protein, such as cows milk protein or gluten. In these cases, the mother may have to restrict her diet to prevent the foreign molecule from getting into her milk. It is important to make this distinction and not blame her milk supply for making the baby sick or uncomfortable. In these situations, I usually ask about how the mother was fed as an infant. Many previous generations didnt breastfeed or not for very long, so the mother herself may not have a totally healthy or impermeable gut (leaky gut syndrome, like Celiac disease), meaning that more offending proteins are making it into her milk. A few generations of formula feeding will take several generations of exclusive breastfeeding to help heal and close off the gut.
