It is the month when Americans and Canadians celebrate the contributions blacks have made to their nation. Other than Abraham Lincoln who played a major part in abolishing slavery, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X are a few more examples Here is some trivia about it for you. Enjoy! 1. February was picked for the Black History Month in honor of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, who were both born in February 2. Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery in 1777 3. Buffalo Soldiers is the name given to a special group of African-American Army soldiers that was formed in 1866 4. Cathay Williams was the one and only female Buffalo Soldier, posing as a man named William Cathay to enlist in the 38th infantry in 1866 5. Lincoln University in Pennsylvania is the first institution of higher education founded for African-Americans 6. Kwanzaa, meaning first fruits in Swahili, is an annual seven-day festival observed by some African Americans during the week of December 26 to January 1 7.
