DID YOU KNOW? Moses and his people spent forty years wandering in the Sinai Desert. In an area which could be crossed in a week of walking, approximately two million people wandered in circles unable to find their way to the Holy Land that they had been on the border of at one time. When Moses led his people to the border of the Promised Land, they sent in twelve spies, one from each tribe, to check out the territory they were about to enter. The twelve spies discovered that there were giants in that land. Huge people, like the giant Goliath that David killed, were such a threat that most of the spies were so frightened that they didn’t want to go there. Go had told them that they would not have to fight their battles, but that the enemy would be driven out before them by God Himself. But the sight of these giants cast such fear that these men seem to have forgotten the power of their Lord. But why did it take forty years to get back? It was because of the judgment of God concerning their discovery. The spies had been in the land for forty days. God told them that He would have them wander one year for each day they spent spying out the land. Numbers 14:34-35 (KJV) After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. 35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die. Why was God angry? The Israelites should have known the power of their God. He had delivered them from Egypt and Pharaoh. He had divided the waters of the Red Sea and brought them through and drowned Pharaoh’s army by closing the waters over them. Why, then, did they even send spies into the Promised land? It appears that they did not trust their Lord to deliver the land to them out of the hands of their enemies. So they spent forty years in the desert. Do you trust your God to “deliver us from evil?”
