DID YOU KNOW? Pope Leo XIII, (Pope from 1878 to 1903) 1. Was the one who named the University of Santo Tomas the title, the Catholic University of the Philippines, which can confirm, non-CHED approved degrees like Doctor of Jurisprudence, Doctor of Canon Laws, Licentiate in Sacred Theology, etc. among others (ako doctor lang ko sa Kapilya, oi)..... 2. Pope Leo XIII, wrote and published Riddles in Latin (tigmo-tigmo ba nga Linatin).... daghan to siya ug tigmo, but few understood because it was all in Latin. there were samples in the LObservatore Romano (twas my favorite newspaper magazine available at the USC library, which the USC Periodical librarian was generous to reserve copies for me, before it went to the Fathers quarters.... he he he 3. Pope Leo was a very refine fellow, highly cultured in the arts, and literature. He was a poet who wrote his poems and riddles at the back of the Apostolic palace in the Vatican gardens during his lull times. He used to plant his own grape vineyard in here. One time, the Palace was in chaos because of loud noise of rifles heard from the gardens, which everyone thought the Pope was assassinated. No, at all, the Pope just called up the Vatican Swiss Guards to fire their rifles to get rid of Sparrows feeding themselves of the near harvest of his grapes. 4. Pope Leo XIII was the pioneering Pope to write Social Encyclicals. These are encyclicals which addressed the Zeitgeist of the times (nauso nga panahon), the rise of industrialization and free enterprizes which protect the rights of labor and workers. His encyclical Rerum Novarum (Of new things), was addressed to employers and labor. The theme was to respect the laborers and to give them just wages and compensation. The Popes after him wrote similar encyclicals to continue Leo XIII teachings: Pope Pius XI, (1922-1939), wrote Quadragesimo Anno (the 40th year after Rerum Novarum) on capital and labor, Pope St. John XXIII,(1958-1962), wrote (Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), Pope Paul VI, (1962-1978), wrote Populorum Progressio(On the Development of Peoples), and Pope St. John Paul II, 1978-2005, wrote two (2) encyclicals on labor: Centisimus Annos (100th year after Rerum Novarum, and Laborem Excercins (On the Exercise of Labor). that is why progressive capitalists now heeding the church social teachings, are cognizant of these new things about right and duties of workers and employers. Nagteach man gani si Leo XIII to organize the labor for the welfare of workers, pero wa magtudlo nga magstrike ug magrally, he he he Sus ako kaha no magcompile pud ko ug mga tigmo oi, naa ko daghan, ako pa e-research, he he. ako sa una nananum pud ko ug kapayas sa likod sa balay but the tikarow and kabog would eat the ripe ones. Ug di man ko qualified mo write of encyclicals oi, mao kini na lang akong gi post nga estorya, may pakapin nga pakulo, aron vivo ra, alegre pud sii.
