DID YOU KNOW THAT ABOUT BERLIN? M and the Berliner Ring Did you know that Fritz Lang, the über-famous German film director and the maker of such cinematic treasures as Metropolis and Dr. Mabuse, who also wrote the script (together with his wife, the actress Thea von Harbou) and directed the still blood-curdling story of M - Eine Stadt Sucht Einen Mörder from 1931 used the expertise of true Berlin criminals to make the script as real as possible? He received professional counselling from the members of the Berliner Ring, a well-known and extremely influential criminal organisation who in a sense co-governed the city in the first three decades of the 20th century. The story of a child murderer on the prowl for his little victims in the streets of Berlin was based on several real cases from the city daily press. Fritz Lang profited from the insider knowledge of the criminal milieu as well as from their actual presence on the set. The around 25 Berlin small criminals and offenders he employed as extras for his film added to it something extremely precious from the point of view of a conscientious film-maker: they made it appear real. For all those among our readers who appreciate the German pre-WW2 cinema and do not mind a little chill going down their spine, even at Christmas, here is Fritz Lang´s M from 1931 served with English subtitles. Enjoy it! https://youtube/watch?v=nM0w1dTNAH0
