DID YOU KNOW? The Great Cat Massacre. In Paris in the late 1730s, a group of apprenticed printers, living in horrible conditions and being fed scraps of food that not even their masters beloved cats would eat, were consistently plagued by whining alley cats during the night. To put an end to their plight, one of the apprentices spent several nights howling and meowing outside his masters bedroom. The printer and his wife became so convinced they were being bewitched that they ordered the apprentices to round up all the cats they could find on the Rue Saint Severin. The apprentices ritualistically disposed of the cats, and even held a trial for some of them, during which they convicted the cats of witchcraft and subsequently hanged them.
