DID YOU KNOW...? The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States was written in 1892 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus arrival to America. Originally, the pledge consisted of only 31 words and was recited while performing whats known as a Roman salute (very similar to the Nazi salute): I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Since it was first published in a childrens magazine in 1892, the pledge has undergone three main changes: 1.- In 1923, the words my Flag were changed to the flag of the United States of America, as to avoid confusion amongst immigrants. 2.- After World War II, the Roman salute was replaced by the less biased move of putting ones right hand over ones heart. 3.- The phrase under God was not added to the original text until 1954. The addition has prompted several lawsuits, but in 2002 the Supreme Court ruled that the use of the phrase was legal. What is not legal, as ruled by the same High Court in 1943, is that public students be required to recite the pledge daily. QUESTION: How about your country? Do you guys have your own pledge of allegiance? We can tell you that, as far as Spain is concerned, we do not have one here and that patriotism is in no way endorsed in public schools. We do have a national anthem, although it has no words. As for Catalonia, our national anthem is called The Reapers, in allusion to the revolution that Catalan farmers led in 1640 against the abusive troops of Spain. Were linking a performance of the song to this post. Hope youll like it! ;)
