DID YOU KNOW? Through the long term DOE/REEF Grouper Moon project looking at the endangered Nassau grouper, school students from the Cayman Islands and also the Bahamas and the USA have been receiving classes....from underwater! This month, we were in Little Cayman with the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) studying the spawning aggregation of the Nassau Grouper. As well as some research, an educational initiative has been launched in over a dozen Caymanian schools, as well as two schools in The Bahamas and several in the US. Grouper Moon scientists hosted several live webcasts from the field (both above water and below) with classrooms in the Cayman Islands and beyond. The chats are all archived online on YouTube --youtube/channel/UCjyL7RI710FVZujOh-I2udw. In total this year, 15 classrooms at 10 schools on all three islands in the Cayman Islands, two schools in The Bahamas, and 1 school in Washington State (US) participated in the Grouper Education Program. Its worth noting that the significant expansion of the program into more Caymanian schools this year was thanks to the Teacher Professional Workshops held last December with support from DOE, the Department of Education Services, and Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. Be sure to watch the live-from-the-field chats, share them with your friends, or show them to your family: youtube/channel/UCjyL7RI710FVZujOh-I2udw. More Grouper news to come.......! Have a great weekend!
