DID YOU KNOW? by Yvonne Ryba 9/24-9/30 The guest speaker at the September lunch of the Womens League of San Jacinto County was Jerry Strouse. Mr. Strouse talked about San Jacinto County Habitat for Humanity which is a member of Shepherd Chamber of Commerce. Later, I visited the new Home Center and talked to Debbie Hanson, the Executive Director. This Home Center is a home improvement resale shop and has a large variety of reusable building materials, furniture and appliances. The prices for these donated items is incredibly low and all proceeds go towards Habitat for Humanity. All the people working there are volunteers. I saw filing cabinets for $20 and lawn equipment, doors, tools and flooring at very low prices. If you are needing anything for your remodeling, you should see what they have. Things come and go quickly of course. People donate items and materials they dont need or have left over. Hours of Operation are 9.AM- 3 PM from Thursday through Saturday. Call them at 936-653-1890, 21 Live Oak Street, Coldspring, behind Paradise Grill. Debbie showed me photos of the houses which have been built in our county. There are guide lines for selection of those chosen and they must be able to show that they have a job, since these are not free homes. They are simple. decent homes at a very affordable price. Habitat assesses the situation of each applicant and they are expected to complete 350 volunteer hours of sweat equity to be completed before and after becoming a home owner. Habitat finances the house for the partner, which is what you become when chosen, but they do not charge interest. This is based on the founders of Habitat for Humanitys Christian beliefs. Millard and Linda Fuller began this organization to help those who would never be able to own a house in the normal manner. They did it not to make money but to follow their religious principles. The organization is now worldwide. Volunteers are always needed. Call the number above if you want to help. It looks as if Fall has arrived and soon Halloween will be here. San Jacinto County Historical Commission needs volunteers too! This time it is to help with the Old Haunted Jail in Coldspring. Every year the Jailhouse Museum is transformed into a spooky (and noisy) Haunted Jail where people come to be escorted through the darkened corridors of yesteryear and find themselves face to face with a ghost or other frightening figure. If you would like to be an actor for two weekends in October and enjoy dressing up in costume and scary makeup, call Cora of Coras Corner at 936-653-4177 or 936-524-3043. You need to be 16 years old for this. However, if you are younger and would like to help, you can decorate the Jailhouse with the creepy stuff that goes with the job! If you need Community Service hours, you can do them as a volunteer for the Historical Commission in either job. The Pizza Kitchen at Dellas is getting very busy and is looking for some good help. If you are interested call Della at 936-628-3387 or visit at 3510 Hwy 59 N. Shepherd. Texas Grill have new menus. They also have new items on them! Theres an appetizer called Pretzel Cheese Bites. Another is Cheese Fries. There is a section titled Exotics which features the Buffalo, Elk and White Tail Deer Burgers for which Texas Grill is famous and a Herbivore Burger for those who are vegetarian. Some of the new features are named after staff members. Tatas Grilled Cheese with Pepper Jack, Bacon and Smoked Turkey ($7.49) is named after server Tania, whose nickname is TaTa. I told her that in England where I was born, we say Ta Ta for Bye Bye, which she thought was funny! Texas Grill 281-761-4565 Shepherd Chamber of Commerce is 60 years old this year. We are having a Birthday Lunch on October 1 at noon in Shepherd Community Center.
