DID YOU KNOW... that in 2010, Americans spent just over nine percent of their disposable income on food (5.5 percent at home and 3.9 percent eating out)? This is a dramatically lower percentage spent than just decades ago in the early 1960s, when over 17 percent was spent on food, and even more of a "bargain" compared to 1930, when Americans spent over 24 percent of their disposable income to feed their families. Given the similarities in the Canadian and US "food" delivery models, it is reasonable to expect numbers in Canada to be comparable on most food items (except the few items regulated by marketing boards, like milk). But at what price? Industrial "agribusiness" that has lowered nutritional content of "real" food (like feed-lot cattle which are fed grain rather than the forage their systems were designed to handle) and increased our exposure to sugar, salt, and other unhealthy ingredients. There is also the specter of increased use of artificial colours and flavours - many derived from the waste byproducts of petroleum processing, GMOs, and more...
