DIRECTORATE OF ARCHAEOLOGY & MUSEUMS SECTOR, KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA. The present Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is very much interested in the preservation, protection and promotion of the cultural heritage of the province and inspite of financial constraints huge funds are allocated for this purpose. 1) Under the 18th Constitutional Amendment, 91 the archaeological sites, historic buildings and Swat Museum were transferred by the Federal Govt to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the province became the owner and custodian of its own cultural assets. 2) The Provincial Govt is very keen in the preservation of the devolved archaeological sites and approved the following schemes for this purpose. Name of the Scheme Total cost Year of Approval a) 110092-Conservation & Rehabilitation of heritage sites & provision of facilities/infrastructure and installation of sign boards/milestones for key archaeological sites. 58.200 million 2011-12 b) 120087-Conservation & Development of World Heritage Sites of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 50.000 million 2012-13 c) 120981-Preservation/Conservation & improvement of 91 devolved archaeological sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 100.000 million 2012-13 3) The Directorate of Archaeology carried out excavations on: a) World Heritage site of Takht-i-Bahi b) Archaeological site of Jamal Garhi c) Archaeological site of Baja, Swabi. 4) Organized an International Conference on the recent developments in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Archaeology on the premises of Peshawar Museum. Scholars and experts from Pakistan and abroad read out research papers on the subject. The participants took great interest in the presentation of papers. 5) The Provincial Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provided funds for the preservation of Sethi House, Peshawar. The preservation of the Sethi House was carried out under the guidance of eminent architect Ms. Yasmeen Lari. To highlight the conservation work and historic background of Peshawar and Sethi House, a workshop was held in the Sethi House. 6) Bannu has its own archaeological, culture and cultural heritage. In order to preserve the cultural heritage of Bannu region, the Directorate of Archaeology established a museum, displayed the cultural and ethnological material and properly inaugurated Minister for Archaeology. 7) The Archaeology Department under an approved scheme purchased land for the expansion of Mardan Museum. Hund in the Swabi District was a city of great glory in the past. The Directorate established a museum there which was properly inaugurated by Syed Aqil Shah Minister for Archaeology Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 9) Pushkalavati (Charsadda) was the 1st capital of Gandhara. It is rich in Archaeology and ethnology. The Directorate of Archaeology with a view to preserve the cultural heritage of the area established a museum in the Ghani Dheri complex Charsadda which was properly inaugurated by Syed Aqil Shah Minister for Archaeology Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 10) The historic mosque of Islamia College received great damages due to time and weather effects. Cracks had developed in its structure while its original ornamentation pattern had faded away. The Directorate of Archaeology under the financial assistance of the Provincial Govt started conservation work on this mosque in 2011-12 to save this heritage. This scheme was inaugurated by Syed Jamaluddin Shah, Secretary Archaeology & Museum Department. 11) The Provincial Govt has also approved a scheme for the development of Peshawar Museum. Funds for this purpose have been allocated and work is in progress. 12) The Swat Museum had received great damages due to a bomb blast. The Directorate of Archaeology through the Italian Govt has started work to repair/renovate the museum building. The inaugural ceremony in this regard was held in December, 2011 where Syed Aqil Shah Minister for Sports, Tourism, Youth Affairs, Archaeology & Museums was the chief guest. The building handing over ceremony performed by DCO Swat on 10th of December 2012. In December 2012 the restoration was competed and the DCO Swat inaugurated. 13) Beside this, this Directorate with collaboration with ACT (Italian Govt Fund) carried out excavations at heritage sites of Amluk Dara, Barikot Ghandai and Udigram grave complex. This year we found good number of Buddhist sculpture from these sites. 14) Under the present Govt directive the Directorate of Archaeology & Museums and TCKP took the school students to different archaeological sites and museums to create awareness in society.
