DIRECTORS CUT Vijay Anand ( Rulaa ke gaya sapnaa mera ) The Film : Buoyed by the phenomenal success of Guide, Dev Anand and Vijay Anand, immediately started their next venture with great fanfare... It was a romantic thriller titled Jewel Thief ...Naturally, they did not want to change the winning combination of S D Burman and Shailendra as far as the music of the film was concerned... Written by Vijay Anand himself, Jewel Thief is considered a Bible for people like me who are students of the art of screenplay writing... For two and a half hours, the writer takes the audience on a roller-coaster ride..... only to reveal at the end that the character they believed in, NEVER really existed !!! The Situation : The leading lady ( Vyjantimala ) is missing the man she has fallen in love with... The Location : A lake.... she is on a boat and hearing her singing, Dev Anand is following her in another boat... The Music : Burman da composes a sad and soulful melody and Lata Mangeshkar does full justice with her impeccable singing... The lyrics : Before we go into the actual lyrics of the song, we need to know a little about Shailendras state of mind... Ever since he started writing lyrics for films, Shailendra never ever missed an opportunity, given the situation, to get autobiographical in his writing... Then he started Teesri Kasam.... Teesri Kasam, from the very beginning, was an eye-opener of sorts for Shailendra.... Right from day one, the deceit and let-downs he was facing, took him by surprise.... His writing.... given the situation, sees a definite shift.... he does not give up hope.... He did not give up right till the end...BUT, he starts seeing through the masks that people around him are wearing.... he does not accost, accuse or complain.... he writes...... his pen is his weapon.... but the thick-skinned people around him, understand what he is saying, only after he is no more... Jewel Thief came about at a very critical juncture... Teesri Kasam was in its final stages.... The budget of the film had gone way beyond control.... it was going to lose money for sure... Only a miracle could help him recover the losses.... that miracle DID happen....it was just late by a few months.... a few months too late.... ! This song was one of the songs where Shailendra gave vent to his feelings... The introduction music is just divine.... Lata Mangeshkars aalaaps and sad sounding violins and a cello ....adding to the gloom... A guitar joins in and the rhythm starts.... The mukhdaa ..... Rulaa ke gaya sapna mera.... baithi hoon kab ho savera... Note that on the first line, the song violin is clearly heard with the voice.... Burmandas touch to make it sound sadder... Vijay Anand takes some brilliant shots.... as only he could.... Violins and cello are used in the interlude.... Hariprasad Chaurasia on the flute gives Lata the lead into the verse... Wohi hai gham e dil, wohi hai chanda, taarey, wohi hum, besahaarey... Aadhi raat wohi hai, aur harr baat wohi hai, phir bhi na aaya luteraa... Picture Shailendra....in the wee hours of the morning... cigarette in hand... another day gone by.... the struggle of completing his sapna ..... Teesri Kasam, keeping him awake.... One can interpret luteraa in different ways.... a loan-shark, who had promised him money and did not turn up.... or is it God.... who will rob him of his life ? The second verse gets more sinister... Kaisi yeh zindagi, ke saanson se hum, oobey, ke dil dooba, hum doobey... ek dukhiyaa bechaari, iss jeevan se haari, uss parr yeh gham ka andheraa.... After this song was recorded, Vijay Anand would come to our house almost everyday.... for the other songs of Jewel Thief ..... Baba would be in his room.... the car would be parked in the garage.... One of us children would tell him... Baba is not at home... He would go to the corner and wait for hours....This went on for many days.... Finally, one day, Baba met him and said... I will not be able to write the other songs.... please grant me this favour.... take Majrooh Sultanpuri to write the other songs... The favour was granted...This was the only song Shailendra wrote for Jewel Thief .... Did he do it deliberately ? Had he said what he wanted to ? Till next week... https://youtube/watch?v=SnH6JJtY_j0 Rula Ke Gaya Sapna Mera Jewel Thief 1967 HD
