DISAPPOINTMENT Has there ever been something that you wanted to achieve but you were disappointed? You set a plan to get a business going and it doesnt work for you. Or, you expected someone to do something for you: a birthday party, a work related detail... but it didnt materialize. It happens frequently in many contexts. Maybe thats why some people just complain. If things dont go their way, they complain... louder. Or perhaps you might be wondering helplessly, what went wrong? Or worse, feel inadequate in some way because maybe Im not good enough so I didnt get it. Ironically, as we start wondering what it means to get to the next level, we often try to jump through hoops. How do I get that attention I want? How will I finally be recognized? Why do others get it but I dont? Objective, external criteria are not always there, and it turns out to be a vast space, unexplored. And this can be frightening or daunting for many. The problem most people dont realize is that disappointment is a barrier to moving forward especially if the disappointment is toward someone else. You cannot change what others limitations are. You can only change yours. So you didnt get the promotion. Or the contract. Or your family forgot your birthday. Or your supervisor didnt notice the extra work you put in. Dont get me wrong: these may be real disappointments or unfairness. But it stops there, possibly with some sulking, and life isnt going to change for you until you know yourself and your limits well. Disappointment damages you more than it damages others, if at all! HOW BEST would you feel recognized? Collect awards? Certificates? Ribbons? Public apologies? Really? Just because you didnt get a piece of paper determines your self worth?? Heres one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite characters. This message is a reminder that we have to forge our destiny with our own hands, hearts and minds. Dont let others ways of thinking or others methods of recognition stop you from blazing your own trail to recognize your own achievements and digging deep so you know what you stand for and what your place is in this world. Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that! - Rocky Balboa. Make it happen, whatever it is that you desire. Know that you can. Strive to see it happen. And keep seeing that reality growing in your mind every day.
