DISCLAIMER-The following is not the view of KGRT or Adams Radio Group So after reading alot of posts and hearing some comments on television about the passing of Robin Williams I felt like I had to say something about the what a selifish thing to do and how could he not care about his family comments that seem to come out, not only in this instance but when suicide is part of the equation at all. First off everyone is entitled to their opinions, but sometimes opinions can change.. If youve never had the privilege of having the cold spectre of depression lay its hands on you, you will never understand the feeling of utter hopelessness that beats itself so deep into the fiber of your being that even the most basic function like breathing almost seems impossible. You find no value in ANYTHING you do or say. When you say that committing suicide is cowardly or chickenshit or selfish than I wonder if thats because there is something more you want to TAKE from that person (joy, laughter, security, etc.) to make you feel better? In the mind of someone who is contemplating taking the selfish way out theyre thinking that they have nothing left to GIVE except allowing the people that love them to not have to worry about them anymore. A mother the peace at night of not worrying if her drug addicted son is ever going to find his way out of the darkness. A daughter not having to ever be embarrassed again by her fathers actions. A father never having to search the streets for his daughter praying to God to let him find her one more time before its too late. THOSE could be just a few of the thoughts that with the help of depression makes someone think that that what they are going to do will actually HELP those they love in the long run. Those that have been there and come back know thats not true. Those that have been blinded by the darkness cant see the light that their families love has been shining forever. If you know someone who is suffering through depression, please understand that: One, its real and not something that anyone has ever wished they had. Two, the power of being there for them, if for nothing else than to just BE there is stronger than you could imagine. For this too shall pass. It always does. Especially when there is someone there to remind them. -Sean
