DISCOVER PLZEŇ - EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2015 West Bohemian metropolis Pilsen is famous not only for its beer but it is also the European Capital of Culture 2015. Its picturesque historic centre attracts visitors thanks to its large number of galleries and museums as well as many sights which include, for example, the Franciscan Monastery, Brewery Museum with historic underground, Renaissance Town Hall or the Great Synagogue, the fourth largest in the world. The programme of the European Capital of Culture 2015 will be launched on Saturday 17th January by ringing four new bells in the tower of the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. Throughout the year visitors will experience hundreds of large and small events, e.g. Festival of Light (20-22/02), a very attractive 70th anniversary of the liberation of Pilsen by the American army with a concert of Lynyrd Skynyrd (01-06/05), a new circus season featuring the world’s best artists or a procession of giant puppets Royal de Luxe (28-30/08). Visit attractive exhibitions of top artists, view unique residential interiors of the world-famous architect Adolf Loos, have fun with children in the Pilsen Zoo or Dinopark, or in the Techmain Science Centre and 3D Planetarium, and taste the genuine Pilsen beer on the tour in the Plzeňský Prazdroj Brewery. The overall impression from the visit of Pilsen can be complemented by trips to nearby surroundings, for example to see unique Baroque sights during the festival of 9 Weeks of Baroque.
