DISNEYLAND FACT OF THE DAY: Space Girl and Space Man roamed Tomorrowland for about two decades. The Space Man role was inaugurated in 1955 soon after Disneyland opened; so popular was the character that crowds would trail along behind him as he walked. Later, Space Girl joined him. The fit young couple rode on attractions, shook hands with guests, and promoted a happy and energetic technological future as the symbols of Tomorrowland. The pair wore big cartoonish outfits that were definitely futuristic but not realistic. The couples varied wardrobe included clothing made of both white and foil-looking material, silver boots, huge glass helmets with antennae on top, thick padded rings for their forearms and shins, and little oxygen tanks to wear on their backs. Space Girl sometimes wore either a white pantsuit or a short, white dress. Silliest of all was her cape--super-fashion taken right out of super-hero comic books. Real space men did eventually arrive in Disneyland. In 1969 the Tomorrowland Stage broadcast a live TV feed of Apollo astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. Eight years later, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Wally Schira, and Alan Shepard were among the astronauts on hand for Space Mountain debut.
