DIY archery hunting elk on public land is physically, by far, one - TopicsExpress

DIY archery hunting elk on public land is physically, by far, one of the hardest things Ive ever done. Over the course of the past month, the mountains have brought me to tears, made me laugh, made me sweat my ass off, but more importantly, I have made memories while out hunting on these mountains, that will last a lifetime. Although I wasnt able to harvest an elk, I had the opportunity to fling my 1st arrow at a bull elk. Even though it was just a spike, words cant even describe the feeling while full draw at a 500+ pound animal! Bill was able to harvest a cow elk just 4 days before the season was over, I must admit, I was a little worried about not having meat in the freezer for the winter. (Ive been spending $600 a month on groceries, food in this remote little mountain town is expensive). So, the last 3 days of the season was spent trying to get me a bull. The last 3 days was the best of the season. I had a 5x5 bull come in to 30 yards, he pushed a cow out in front of him to check things out, while he stayed in the thick timber. Unfortunately, I couldnt get a shot. I couldve easily shot the cow at 10 yards but I think I had a little bit of bull fever as soon as I saw the horns and didnt even pay attention to the cow. I was so close to so many different screaming bulls, once again words cant describe the feeling you get when a bull is screaming 40-50 yards away. The last 2 hours of the season was spent chasing a 6x6 bull. We got within 40 yards, once again, we were in thick timber though and couldnt get a shot. He was the loudest, most pissed off bull, Ive ever heard. Bill was calling for me, and we chased the bull together. We spent 2 hours chasing him all over the mountain, just before dark he dropped over the other side of the mountain into a huge drainage, he was gone! That bull was getting so angry, he most likely wouldve came in to fight had we had more daylight. Even though I didnt harvest an elk, I got to see some of the best sunrises/sunsets on ridges that I probably would not have just willingly hiked to, had I not been hunting. I learned so much and feel absolutely blessed that I had the opportunity to hunt elk. My out of state elk tag wasnt cheap, but it was some of the best money Ive ever spent! Next year Ill be considered an ID resident and am counting down the days until archery elk season! #shooton #hunthappy #lifeatfulldraw #keephammering #uahunt
